JOSÉ RUA

Assistant Conductor

Bachelor's degree in clarinet from the Federal University School of Music. Graduated in 1982 with a scholarship from CAPES and Fulbright with Professor Kalmen Opperman at Boston University.

 

Mr. Rua returned to Brazil after intensive activities abroad as conductor, chamber musician, soloist and teacher, performing to critical acclaim various presentations and performances in the USA.

 

Mr. Rua was a clarinet player for the Municipal Opera Theater Orchestra of Rio de Janeiro and has participated in major concerts series, highlighting the Brazilian Contemporary Music Biennial and Brazilian Music Panorama. While in the USA, Mr. Rua was a conductor and artistic director of Chipewa String orchestra and Wooster Clarinet Choir in Ohio. He is currently conductor and music director of the UFRJazz Ensemble and saxophone professor at the UFRJ School of Music. His intense activities as a teacher and a reviewer of scores for "Big Band" makes him known and respected in Brazilian instrumental music. He is at present time reviewing Brazilian works for saxophone.
